United Way Forms Due This Week; Middle Schoolers Take Center Stage

Quick reminder: The Albuquerque Public Schools/United Way employee campaign is quickly drawing to a close. Pledge forms are due by Friday, Nov. 19. If you haven’t received a pledge form, or would like to know more about the campaign, contact Phill Casaus at the APS Education Foundation, 878-6165, or Schools at the elementary, middle and high school levels are competing for the Superintendent’s Horizon Award, which goes to the schools that raised the most money. The top money-raiser this year will receive a free staff breakfast, courtesy of the Foundation.

Employees may contribute money to their favorite charity, and all money that is contributed to the Foundation goes to the Horizon Awards, which fund top teaching projects throughout the district. Two weeks ago, 21 schools – representing more than 80 teachers and 5,000 students – received Horizon Awards.

There’s no such thing as “the forgotten middle” at Albuquerque Public Schools.

This week, middle schoolers are taking center stage.

The APS Education Foundation and Borders are recognizing 27 top APS middle school  students at Wednesday night’s Board of Education meeting. The students will receive a $25 gift certificate from Borders and the Foundation in appreciation of their exemplary work in the classroom and around their school communities.

Students were informed of the honor in October – the Month of the Early Adolescent. They were picked by their school communities to receive the award based on the school’s own criteria.

“One of the great strengths of APS are the thousands of great kids we have in our middle schools,” said Foundation Executive Director Phill Casaus. “Unfortunately, not enough people know about them – and the people who teach them. This is a recognition of people who are going to be our stars as they progress through school and life.”
