Sandia National Labs & Lockheed Martin Support Horizon Campaign

Sandia is the Science/Technology/Engineering/Math sponsor of the 2013 spring Horizon Awards. Other businesses, large and small, as well as APS employees through their United Way contributions support the APS Education Foundation effort that puts money back into the classroom.

Sandia National Laboratories and Lockheed Martin were in on the ground floor of the APS Education Foundation Horizon Campaign. Their commitment is as strong today as it was when the effort began in the fall of 2010.

Sandia is the Science/Technology/Engineering/Math sponsor of the 2013 spring Horizon Awards, funding a variety of innovative classroom projects that will commence this fall.

“There’s probably not a day when Sandia and its employees aren’t doing something for Albuquerque Public Schools,” said Foundation Executive Director Phill Casaus. “Sandia employees volunteer in our schools, help run enrichment programs after school and even provide summer programs that help kids get involved with STEM. But their commitment to the Horizon Awards is a huge benefit to teachers and kids throughout the city.”

Spring Horizon recipients were honored at the Board of Education meeting on May 1, and were recognized by the Board of Education, Superintendent Winston Brooks and Gov. Susana Martinez, who dropped by a reception at City Centre.

In all, more than $73,000 funded 25 separate projects in STEM, Fine Arts, Middle/High School Activities and Literacy. Since 2010, Horizon Awards have put more than $375,000 into APS classrooms.

The Foundation’s Horizon Campaign helps fund Horizon Awards. Donors to the campaign, large and small, were recognized during the meeting. Companies such as Wells Fargo, Westwind Lanscaping, Target, PNM, Don Chalmers Ford, Technology Integration Group, Intel, and Comcast were honored, as well as private and foundation donors such as the Stocker Foundation. Among the biggest contributors to the Horizon Awards are APS employees through the Foundation’s United Way Campaign. Every dollar contributed to the Foundation in the United Way campaign funds Horizon Awards.

“It’s a team effort for our community, and it pays off – more than 25,000 APS students have been touched by Horizon Award projects,” Casaus said. “It’s the kind of thing that pays benefits in the classrooms, and we have folks like the employees at Sandia National Labs and our other donors to thank.”
