Rent a Tux for Prom, Help APS Teachers, Students

Two Albuquerque tuxedo rental shops give back to the APS Education Foundation during prom season.

The Albuquerque Public Schools Education Foundation is teaming up with a couple of tuxedo rental shops once again this prom season to help raise money for APS teachers and students.

For the third straight year, Suits Unlimited, a locally owned business run by a family of APS graduates, is sponsoring Tuxes 4 Teachers, a campaign that contributes $10 from every prom tuxedo rental to the Foundation's Horizon Campaign. The money will go specifically to the Seeds of Learning grant program helping teachers update and enhance curriculum and access much-needed materials and classroom activities. Teachers have often paid for such expenses out of their own pockets.

Tuxes for Teachers has raised about $5,000 for schools and teachers. This year, the business has committed to contributing an additional $1,500 to the high school renting the most tuxes from the store at 5406 Menaul Blvd. NE.

This prom season, a second tux rental shop will participate in a give-back program. Tarin’s Image Tuxedos, located in the Hoffmantown Shopping Center at the corner of Wyoming and Menaul NE, has committed to donate $10 to the Foundation for every prom tux rented. Tarin’s calls its program Prom Tuxedos – Funds for Our Schools. In addition, the business that has been renting prom tuxes to high school students for more than 30 years is offering a 15 percent discount to students. Students will need to bring a discount card with them, which have been provided to each of the high schools.

"These are the kind of partnerships we want more of," said Foundation Executive Director Phill Casaus. “What a great way to turn a fun event – high school prom – into something that benefits students and teachers in the district.”

Tux rentals at both shops start at about $50.
