Foundation Seeking Student Board Member

The APS Education Foundation is looking for a high school sophomore or junior to serve on its board with full voting privileges and responsibilities. Deadline for applying is Sept. 18.

The APS Education Foundation is looking for another student board member to join Hayne Arismendi, a senior at Manzano High School.

Student board members will have full voting privileges and responsibilities, and their terms will last through their time at an APS traditional or alternative high school. For purposes of consistency and long-term planning, we are looking for a high school junior or sophomore in the 2013-14 school year.

What is the APS Education Foundation and what is its mission?
The Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit that raises money and public awareness for the educational goals of Albuquerque Public Schools. The Foundation is focused on the Horizon Campaign – a push to gain funding for four key programs: Fine Arts, Middle/High School Activities, Science/Math/Engineering/Technology and Literacy programs.

As a student member, you will serve with key business, community  and education leaders, including APS Superintendent Winston Brooks and Board of Education President Martin Esquivel. You will play a part in organizing the Foundation’s fundraising and consciousness-raising events. You also will serve on a committee that will help guide key aspects of the Foundation’s operations.

Potential board members may apply for membership to the Foundation Executive Director Phill Casaus, who will place nominations before the Foundation’s Board Management Committee. That committee will select the nominees and forward them for approval by the full board.

Nominations for membership must include:

  • A reference from an APS high school principal
  • A reference from an APS teacher who has had direct contact with the student
  • A letter from the principal and a parent, allowing him or her to miss class for bi-monthly board meetings, in addition to an occasional committee meeting.
  • Deadline for nomination: Sept. 18, 2013.

Nominees are asked to fill out the following information. Nominees may be contacted by the executive director by telephone in case there are questions.

To apply, here’s what you must do:
