Bruce Atencio, Heather Montoya Promote Lifelong Fitness at 7 Bar

The two PE teachers are the final Pepsi/APS Education Foundation Teachers of the Month for 2014-15.

Meet Bruce Atencio and Heather Montoya, PE teachers at Seven Bar and the final Pepsi/APS Education Foundation Teachers of the Month for 2014-15.

Why were these two selected? Principal Nancy Lacher explains:

"Our PE teachers promote lifelong fitness for our students and staff. They lead by example, teaching these skills and offering ways for the whole community to be involved in being healthy, not only physically, but also with a spirit of caring and giving back to the community as well.

This year alone, they have sponsored and supported our Bucket Filling initiative with staff members contributing and taking the “bucket challenge” for Lou Gehrig’s disease as one of our teacher’s parent was diagnosed with the disease.

They have promoted and implemented a school wide fitness day with volunteers from the community  including fitness partners like Defined Fitness, New Mexico Sports and Wellness, Presbyterian Hospital, various gyms, the Army ROTC, APD, AFD,  Cibola High sports programs, and other partners participating in running  fitness stations.

They sponsored a family fun run for our community in the bosque with former and current students and families participating (over 400 of them) with timing chips, t-shirts, and all.

They sponsored and adopted a child for Make A Wish again this year.  Each year we have raised about $5000 for a child.  Over the past six years, our school has raised over $30,000 for Make A Wish.

And each spring they sponsor a school wide Talent Show totally run by students which occurs at Cibola in their PAC and is a highlight of our school year."
