Aztec's Imagination Playground Encourages Creative Play

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico and KaBOOM! partnered with the APS Education Foundation to provide new playground equipment at the APS Aztec Special Education Complex.

APS Aztec Special Education Complex recently unveiled its new Imagination Playground, a creative play equipment system granted by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM), in partnership with the national non-profit KaBOOM!. Students at the APS Aztec Special Education Complex range in age from 3 to 22, are medically fragile, have autism or other intensive special needs. The new play space will provide these students with a great, safe place to play.

Imagination Playground in a Cart™ is an innovative design in play equipment that encourages creativity, communication and collaboration in play. With a collection of custom-designed, oversized blue foam parts, Imagination Playground provides a changing array of elements that allow children to create a playspace that is constantly built and re-built by their imagination.

“The APS Aztec Special Education Complex provides core resources and ancillary spaces to serve more than half of the state’s most severe special needs students and their families,” said APS Superintendent Raquel Reedy. “We are grateful for the interactive learning provided by the Imagination Playground supporting social, physical, spatial and creative growth opportunities.”

Play is the business of childhood and is essential to the physical, cognitive, creative, social and emotional development of every kid. It’s how kids build strong muscles and healthy bodies; it’s how they learn problem-solving, conflict resolution and creativity; it’s how they make friends and build strong bonds with adults. Play is critical to a kid’s ability to thrive.

“Imagination Playgrounds inspire children to be active and creative through play,” said Janice Torrez, divisional vice president of external affairs and chief of staff, BCBSNM. “We are committed to supporting the overall health of children in our communities, and we look forward to seeing the imaginative structures that students at the APS Aztec Special Education Complex will create with this equipment.”
