APS Employees Dig Deep, Give Generously

Donations to United Way up Despite Tough Financial Times

Despite one of the most difficult budget years on record, Albuquerque Public Schools employees have set a record in the annual United Way campaign, giving more than $285,000.

This year’s campaign raised $10,000 more than last year’s mark of $275,000, APS Education Foundation Executive Director Phill Casaus announced.

“It really is an amazing feat and an indication of how much teachers, administrators and support personnel care about their neighborhoods and city,” Casaus said. “The district has a significantly smaller employee base than it had a year ago, and financial times are tough in education, but people have really come through.”

Gifts to the APS Education Foundation are directed toward the Horizon Awards, which benefit classrooms in four major programs: fine arts, literacy, middle/high school activities and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education. This fall, the Foundation’s board awarded nearly $70,000 to 21 teachers or teams of teachers in a competitive proposal process. Those grants reached more than 5,000 APS children.

A final count for the 2010 employee campaign should be completed in January and the United Way of Central New Mexico will announce totals for its entire campaign in early 2011.
