Adrian Chavez Elected President of the APS Education Foundation Board of Directors

Adrian Chavez of Pepsi Beverages Company a division of PepsiCo, a longtime supporter of student-focused programs in Albuquerque Public Schools, has been elected president of the APS Education Foundation Board of Directors.

Chavez is a 1992 Del Norte High School graduate and succeeds Jeff Lunsford, who served as president of the 22-member Foundation board in 2015 and 2016.

Married to an APS teacher and with two daughters in district schools, Chavez has been a longtime member of the Foundation board, serving as its Development Committee chair for the past two years. He is Pepsi’s Key Account Manager for a large portion of New Mexico, and presents the Pepsi/APS Education Foundation Teacher of the Month award.

“I’m a proud New Mexican and a believer in celebrating the things we know we do well,” Chavez said. “I also believe we are just one more moment, idea or action away from turning our state into a place where the economy is strong and robust with a diverse industry. I know for a fact from my own daughters’ experience that APS and its teachers are teaching at a high level and pushing our students farther than we ever dreamed – preparing them for college and the world they have waiting for them.”

Chavez is a graduate of the University of Phoenix and began his career with Pepsi in 1993. He also serves on the CNM Foundation board as well as the University of New Mexico Lobo Club board.

Julia Miera, a general sales manager for Cumulus Media, was elected as vice president. Tony Dees of Sandia Area Federal Credit Union will serve as secretary/treasurer of the volunteer board of directors, which includes three APS students as voting members.

The APS Education Foundation recently was ranked as the No. 15 K-12 education foundation in the nation; the second consecutive year it has been in the top 15. In 2015-16, it provided support to nearly 34,000 APS students through its many grant programs.

The Foundation will open 2017 with a recently elected board member – Joe Trimble, a regional small business manager for Wells Fargo’s New Mexico/western border region. Trimble is a Valley High School graduate and also has a daughter in APS.
