Teacher of the Month Denise Garcia, Van Buren MS

Posted January 17, 2018, 4:30 PM. Updated January 28, 2020, 1:40 PM.

Pepsi and the APS Education Foundation recognize some of our outstanding teachers.

Denise Garcia is the Pepsi/APS Education Foundation’s Teacher of the Month for January. Pepsi and the APS Education Foundation have partnered for the past eight years to recognize a few of the district’s outstanding teachers for their contributions to the classroom, school, and community.  In their second year, Flying Star Café is recognizing our teachers by donating a gift card.

The Foundation randomly selects one APS school each month, and that school’s principal or staff chooses a teacher to be honored. The teacher receives a $100 check from Pepsi, a $50 gift card from Flying Star Café and acknowledgment on the APS website, Facebook page and electronic billboards.

They receive a small token of appreciation but represent the many outstanding teachers in Albuquerque Public Schools.

[Music] So miss Garcia has been in the district for a number of years, she's been back at Van Buren for approximately five plus years. She is a Van Buren, former Van Buren student so it's always nice to have alumni come back and want to give back to the community that they grew up in. Actually I'm a Van Buren alumni, so when I found out there was an opening at Van Buren, I like jumped all over it. I'm like I got to be back, you know at my school. I think the passion that keeps me going is their minds are fresh, I want young vibrant exciting people to be ready for the next step in their life and that might be the one teacher, the several teacher that they come to see every day and hopefully they also remember some of the stuff that I'm trying to teach them. She's willing to give up time on the weekends to participate in various projects that Van Buren is taking part in, I mean I just can't say enough good things about who she is as a teacher and as a person. she makes it fun, so we get to color and cut out, she makes it so much fun. Well the first thing I always say is grow your brain every day every chance you get. Turn something negative into a positive for sure and that I really cared about each and every one of them. [Music]
