All APS Schools to Start on the Same Day: Aug. 12

Out of an abundance of caution, no schools will start early as previously planned.

Due to public safety and budgetary concerns, all APS schools will start on the same day in the coming school year. That day is tentatively set for Aug. 12, with teachers and school staff returning to work five days earlier on Aug. 5.

The Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education approved the new start date at a special meeting Monday.

There are 21 schools affected by the shift, including 15 that voted to extend the school year by 10 days and another six that had been on an alternative calendar.

The 20 elementary schools and one high school that had planned to start in late July or early August are:

  1. Barcelona
  2. Carlos Rey
  3. Cochiti
  4. Duranes
  5. Eugene Field
  6. Hawthorne
  7. Kirtland
  8. Kit Carson
  9. Los Padillas
  10. Marie Hughes
  11. Mark Twain
  12. Mary Ann Binford
  13. Mountain View
  14. Navajo
  15. Oñate
  16. Pajarito
  17. Sierra Vista
  18. S.R. Marmon
  19. Tomasita
  20. Whittier
  21. School on Wheels High School

The state Public Education Department announced on May 19 the cancellation of the Extended Learning Time Program that would have provided funding for the 15 APS schools whose communities voted for a longer school year.

Only three schools will continue on an extended learning calendar – Hawthorne, Los Padillas, and Whittier elementary schools – with the extra 10 days coming at the end instead of the beginning of the school year. The last day of school for these three schools is now scheduled for June 9.

The state identified these schools as in need of More Rigorous Intervention, and the district made a three-year commitment to provide additional funding for a longer school year as well as extended school days, intervention, and enrichment. This will be the third year of that commitment.

The 2020-2021 school is scheduled to start on Aug. 12. The last day of school for all but the three MRI schools is now set for May 25. However, public health concerns could impact the school calendar, including start and end dates, as well as scheduled breaks and holidays.
