7th-grader Garrick Tam of Cleveland Middle School, 8th-grader Christabel Thiel-Hadjilambrinos of Desert Ridge Middle School, and 8th-grader Makayla Lovato of Jefferson Middle School will represent APS at the state competition.
After 35 rounds, including 22 head-to-head rounds against Christabel, Garrick emerged victorious. The winning word: factitious.
Garrick, Christabel and Makayla, who came in third, will represent Albuquerque Public Schools in the New Mexico State Spelling Bee hosted by the Albuquerque Journal later in the spring.
Sixteen students participated in the district spelling bee, held in late January.
