E. Van Halen Hits the Streets

The APS Fine Arts van transports musical instruments to and from the repair shop and will also deliver art supplies, costumes, and portable stages to schools.

The  Albuquerque Public Schools Fine Arts Department is putting a new spin on customer service. For the first time this week, a brand-new colorful APS Fine Arts van, fondly nicknamed E. Van Halen in honor of rock legend Eddie Van Halen, took to the streets to transport musical instruments to and from the APS repair shop. Eventually, the van will also deliver artwork, costumes, and a portable stage to schools, museums, galleries, and other locations.

“The van isn’t just cool, it’s practical,” said APS Interim Superintendent Scott Elder. “The van will help expedite repairs, so students get their instruments back quicker. Fine Arts teachers will  also save countless after-hours spent picking up and delivering materials for rehearsals, art shows, and drama performances.”

The APS Capital Master Plan office and APS Fine Arts department collaborated on this project to improve customer service to students and teachers. Not all students have transportation to check instruments in for repairs. In many cases, neither teachers nor students have vehicles large enough to transport bulky instruments like tubas, cellos, and harps.

The APS district covers a 1,230-square mile area that encompasses all of the Albuquerque metropolitan area in Bernalillo County and a small part of Sandoval County, so people all over the city may soon spot E. Van Halen.

The new art on wheels vehicle will be especially helpful in the COVID-19 remote learning environment while in-person interactions are limited.
