Comcast Named Outstanding Corporate Partner by APS Education Foundation

Posted February 6, 2020, 3:40 PM. Updated February 18, 2020, 2:48 PM.

Every year, the Foundation recognizes the efforts of a company investing in our district.

The Albuquerque Public Schools Education Foundation named Comcast its 2020 Outstanding Corporate Partner for supporting the work of the Foundation and APS.

Comcast has been a long-time supporter of the Foundation and APS. Through financial contributions, donations, and volunteer hours, Comcast has invested in innovative, enhanced learning opportunities that help APS students reach their full potential.

Each spring on Comcast Care Day, hundreds of volunteers come together to revitalize a school campus. The volunteers work to make the campus cleaner, safer, and friendlier. And, Comcast matches volunteer hours with a monetary contribution to the Foundation’s grant programs.

Through Internet Essentials, Comcast provides low-cost Internet services and computers to families unable to afford connectivity at home. They also provide in-person and online digital training classes without the expectation of a contract or extra fees. So far this school year, more than 900 families have connected to the Internet through this program.

Understanding how important it is for students to have access to technology at home, Comcast donated 100 laptops with free Internet to fifth-graders at three APS schools last fall.

“I will never forget the squeals, smiles, and pure astonishment from the fifth graders who received a computer they could call their own,” said Shannon Barnhill, Executive Director of the APS Education Foundation. “Their faces said it all: someone believed in them and wanted to give them a chance to succeed.”

“Comcast believes in making the future brighter for our students,” Barnhill continued. “They are deeply invested in this community through service, leadership, empowerment, technology, and innovation. They represent opportunity and possibility, and remind us how coming together can make a difference.”

Comcast also is an annual sponsor of the Foundation’s Gold Bar Gala, a night of recognition that raises funds for educator-led innovative programs in APS. This year’s Gold Bar Gala is April 17 at Sandia Resort & Casino. Among the honorees are the 2020 Selfless Seniors, APS Hall of Honor inductees, and Best in Class grantees.

Past APS Education Foundation Corporate Partners include RayLee Homes: A New Generation, Alliance Data, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico.
