APS Open Book Podcast Now Available

The stories only APS can tell in a podcast.

When it comes to Albuquerque Public Schools, it’s a safe bet there will be differences of opinion, but one thing most can agree on is that the community benefits from hearing compelling stories about our students, staff, and families.

Now, anyone interested in exploring the ins and outs of APS will have that opportunity without ever having to attend a public meeting, schedule appointments with district administrators or scour the internet for information.

The APS Communications Department in partnership with the district’s radio station, KANW 89.1 FM, and a retired teacher have just introduced a new monthly podcast called APS Open Book.

The on-air debut of the APS Open Book podcast will be Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 6 p.m. on 89.1 KANW-FM. It is also is available on the Apple Podcast app, Spotify, Stitcher, YouTube,, and

The host of the show, Mark Goodrum, spent 33 years as an APS teacher and band director before retiring a few years ago. Goodrum is passionate about his classroom experiences, is a captivating storyteller and relatable expert.

“We’re excited to introduce the APS Open Book podcast,” said Superintendent Raquel Reedy. “This unique way to share and gain knowledge is both convenient and free. And I’m thrilled to have a seasoned teacher leading the discussions.”

By design, podcast topics will focus on areas that are difficult to absorb in a brief TV news story or even some longer stories published in print or on the web. As a school district, it is our responsibility to evolve with the communication needs of our parents, students and community and the popularity of podcasts can’t be ignored.

We live in a very busy and hectic world. People are using every minute they can to multitask. The convenience of a podcast is especially attractive to parents and others who desire more information about the district but are too busy to attend school or Board of Education meetings. Podcasts go where you go. You don’t have to plan your life around podcasts. You plan podcasts around your life.

The APS Open Book podcast will be accessible  24/7 to anyone with internet access. Goodrum promises engaging, knowledgeable guests who will dig deep to better understand timely, relevant and even challenging topics.

The first episode tackles the gut-wrenching suicide reality in New Mexico. A teacher, crisis outreach counselor and student talk candidly about what it’s like to know someone contemplating suicide, the immediate actions necessary to save a life and the exasperating frequency our students deal with this threat.

Goodrum will collaborate with the district, and hopefully, listeners, to identify future topics. Anyone with ideas is encouraged to send them to
