APS Board Approves New Application Deadline, Timeline for Superintendent Search

New deadline for superintendent applications is March 31

[Albuquerque, NM]—The Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education extended the deadline for applications for superintendent of the district to March 31 and approved a new timeline for reviewing applications and interviewing candidates during their regular meeting this evening.

The Board voted unanimously to approve the new deadline for applications and the new timeline.

“We are committed to a process that is transparent, that includes the public and that engages all those interested in the selection of a new superintendent,” said APS Board of Education President Dr. Don Duran.

He noted that the change in the timeline was based on involving the new Board of Education members who took office earlier this month. “The change is not based on the number of applications received so far, nor is it based on the desire to have a specific candidate apply,” Duran said.

According to the new timeline, the Board is to meet in executive session on the morning of Thursday, April 2, to review applications provided by the district’s contracted search firm, Ray & Associates. The Board plans to narrow the field of candidates to six or seven to be interviewed.

“When the board receives the list of applicants from Ray & Associates on April 2, it will be made public,” Duran added. “We are committed to a fair and full vetting process that involves the community.”

The following week on April 9, the board will again meet in executive session to interview those candidates selected on April 2.

Three finalists will be selected and they will participate in a community forum set for 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, in the John Milne Board Room of the APS Building at 6400 Uptown Blvd. Three additional forums—one for staff and students will be at 7 a.m., one for business and government officials will be at 11:30 a.m., and a second one for staff and students will be at 4 p.m.—on Friday April 10.

Resumes of the finalists will be posted on the APS website so that they can be reviewed before the forums.

“Anyone will be welcome at any of the forums, we just thought we would schedule four different times to make the candidates available to anyone who wanted a chance to hear from them and ask questions,” Duran said.

The Board plans to meet again with the finalists at 9 a.m. on April 11. After that they will make a decision.
