Board Seeks Prioritization of Vaccines for School Employees

Read the Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education resolution.

Adopted in Open Session on February 22, 2021

WHEREAS, public schools have a profound impact on thousands of students, families and staff in New Mexico and are charged with the education, care, and nourishment of students; and

WHEREAS, public schools are an integral part of the health and safety of our communities and general welfare of our state; and

WHEREAS, public schools have a substantial public interest in protecting the health and safety of their students, staff members and communities to ensure that districts most effectively face the challenges from the COVID-19 health emergency; and

WHEREAS, school districts have responded to the challenges of the pandemic by providing resources necessary to ensure delivery of instruction, virtually and in person, as well as meeting basic needs of children such as providing food and providing support for community vaccination sites; and

WHEREAS, school district staff at all levels are essential to the day-to-day operations of districts responsible for the education and social and emotional wellbeing of all students and are critical for virtual and in-class instruction; and

WHEREAS, the ability to maintain classroom learning is directly affected by having healthy teachers and staff whose safety and confidence hinges on access to the vaccines; and

WHEREAS, school districts must provide a consistent environment for student success, one as free as possible from the disruptions of sudden quarantines; and

WHEREAS, to bolster New Mexico's economy and strengthen the educational system, immediate action must be taken to expedite vaccine access to all school district employees; and

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the APS Board of Education requests that Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and the New Mexico Department of Health show clear support for the health and safety of communities by immediately prioritizing the vaccination of public school employees.
