2021-2022 School Year Calendar

The traditional and extended year calendars were approved by the APS Board of Education.

Students return to class on Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2021, with teachers and school staff heading back a week earlier on Aug. 4.

The 2021-2022 school year has many similarities to past calendars, including a two-day fall break in October during the Balloon Fiesta, a three-day break at Thanksgiving, and time off for Labor Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and Presidents Day. Schools also would be closed on Nov. 2 for Election Day and Nov. 11 for Veterans Day. Next year's calendar calls for schools to close for two days for the Vernal Holiday, April 15-18, 2022.

Parent/teacher conferences for all students will take place on Nov. 22 and 23 just before the Thanksgiving break. That's a change from this school year when high school conferences are scheduled for the spring.

The last day of school is Wednesday, May 25, 2022.

In the 2021-2022 school year, winter break stretches from Dec. 20 through Jan. 3 for students, with teachers returning on Jan. 3, 2022, for training and planning.

The second semester starts on Jan. 4, 2022. Spring break is March 21-25.

Other School Year Calendars

Students at schools with an extended school year will start five days earlier on Aug. 4, 2021, and will end the school year five days later on June 2, 2022. Teachers and staff at these schools start on July 28. All other breaks and holidays are the same as the traditional calendar.

Students who attend College and Career High School will follow the CNM calendar.

The APS Board of Education asked for more information before deciding whether to approve an alternative calendar for about half a dozen elementary schools that starts in mid-July and has more breaks during the school year.

The calendars are developed by a committee made up of principals, union representatives, and district administrators with public input. They are then presented to the Board of Education for final approval.
