APS Recognized for Commitment to Accomplished Teaching

Thirty-one APS teachers were board certified in 2019, making Albuquerque Public Schools one of the top 20 districts in the nation in the number of National Board Certified Teachers.

Albuquerque Public Schools ranks 16th in the nation in the number of teachers earning National Board Certification, with 31 teachers achieving the distinguished honor in 2019.

APS now has more than 650 teachers certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, accounting for half of the certified teachers in New Mexico.

This week, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards announced that APS was among 11 school districts named National Board Accomplished Districts for their investment of resources to support advancing quality teaching through National Board Certification. These districts join 81 accomplished districts designated earlier this year in their efforts to encourage teachers to be their best and effectively drive student learning.

“Each of these districts has taken extraordinary steps to impact student learning through National Board certification. Their commitment through financial resources and dedication to creative programming is having an impact on teachers and students, and I’m proud to recognize that work,” said Peggy Brookins, a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT) and the president and CEO of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. “When teachers achieve high standards, they impact their students and communities across the country."

“Becoming a National Board Certified Teacher takes a lot of hard work and commitment. Those who accomplish this lofty goal should be commended, not only for their dedication to the profession but for going the extra mile to assure their students get the best education possible,” said APS Superintendent Raquel Reedy. “Congratulations to the 31 teachers who earned national certification this year and to the more than 650 APS teachers who have attained the honor.”

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan, and nongovernmental organization that advances the quality of teaching and learning by developing professional standards for accomplished teaching. National Board Certification is a voluntary system that certifies teachers who meet high and rigorous standards.
