Albuquerque Public Schools Supt. Raquel Reedy has named Antonio Gonzales, who has been principal of Atrisco Heritage Academy High School for the past four years, as interim associate superintendent for human resources.

“I believe that Mr. Gonzales’ leadership skills are a good match to help the district continue to find, place and retain exceptional teachers, staff and administrators to serve the students of Albuquerque,” Reedy said, adding that the interim appointment will be for a period of one year.

He has served as a member of the district’s union negotiating committee since 2014.

Gonzales, who holds doctorate in education from the University of New Mexico, started with the district as a teacher at Albuquerque High in 2005. He became an assistant principal at AHS in 2009 and was appointed principal at Atrisco Heritage in 2012.

While principal at Atrisco Heritage, Gonzales helped the school raise its grade on the state evaluation system from an ‘F’ in 2012-13 to a ‘B’ in 2013-14. The school, which had a student enrollment of more than 2,500 in 2015-16, is among the largest in the state and 83 percent of its students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches, which the federal government uses as a measure of poverty.

“I am excited to be able to support the work of our district as we support all of our students, employees, and communities in the overall mission of teaching and learning,” Gonzales said.

Irene Cisneros, who has served as an assistant principal at Atrisco Heritage Academy, has been appointed interim principal at the school.
