Wednesday Albuquerque Public Schools Supt. Raquel Reedy helped kick off a new program where APS teachers read books to children at 35 parks, community centers and other locations prior to the summer lunch programs this summer.

The new program called Story Time in the Park began on Monday and will continue Monday through Thursday for three weeks until July 1 and then resume again for another three weeks on July 11. In addition to reading, APS teachers will also talk to parents and about ways they can help their child improve their reading. The stories and activities begin about an hour prior to meal time at each location.

“I think this is a wonderful way for children and families to continue learning this summer,” Reedy said. “The APS Title I program will distribute more than 120,000 books to children who attend the program.”

Laurie Everhart, APS Title I executive director, said the idea is to read to children in locations where they are already going. “We thought that because families were already taking their kids to meal sites, it was the perfect location for us to provide books as well.”

Some locations will have translators to read the books in Spanish as well as English.

Everhart noted that the teachers will provide paper and pencils to the children so that they can write or draw a picture about the books being read.

The Title I program set aside more than $170,000 from funds allocated for parent engagement for the program. The money is used to pay teachers, some interpreters and to buy the books and supplies.
