Albuquerque Public Schools today celebrated the opening of a new artificial turf field for soccer and physical education classes at Rio Grande High School.

The $850,000 project also included bleachers and soccer goals, and a new storage facility for track and cross-country teams at the school. Construction on the project started in June 2015 and was completed late last month.

Funding for the project came from the 2013 capital projects election, with additional funding from the Albuquerque Metropolitan Arroyo Flood Control Authority and from legislative appropriations.

Rio Grande Principal Amanda DeBell said the new field was a welcome addition to the school. “It is used not only by the soccer teams, but throughout the year by students in PE classes,” she said.

APS Superintendent Raquel Reedy noted that athletic facilities are important to help students stay engaged in school. “While the emphasis is on learning math, English and other subjects, athletics like soccer and track and field keep students engaged in school,” Reedy said.

“I want to thank voters for supporting Albuquerque’s students and schools. It’s about the kids,” APS Board of Education Member Dr. Analee Maestas said. “The improvements to this school and those at schools throughout Albuquerque would not be possible without the continued support of the community.”

Westwind Landscape Construction and Architects designed and built the project, along with Guzman Construction Solutions and Rio Conchos.
