Albuquerque, N.M.] – Albuquerque Public Schools has started construction on a new 92,000-square-foot classroom building that will house the 9th grade academy at Rio Grande High School.

The $17 million building is just part of $26.3 million in site improvement projects that broke ground this morning at the school in Southwest Albuquerque. Other improvements include a new bus drop-off and pick-up area, new soccer fields, new tennis courts, new softball fields and new artificial turf for the football and baseball fields at Rio Grande.

“This new 9th grade academy building here at Rio Grande will incorporate the latest innovations in architectural design to assure that students and teachers are able to take advantage of leading edge instructional practices,” said APS Superintendent Dr. Luis Valentino, during groundbreaking ceremonies held this morning. “This school is just the latest of the older schools in the district to begin renovations and rebuilding.”

“We are committed to serving these students, and all students in the district, with learning facilities that are up-to-date and provide the best environment for teachers and students,” Valentino added.

When completed in May 2016, the new 9th grade academy building will house 48 classrooms, three computer labs, as well as space for teacher offices and student common areas.

“I want to thank voters for supporting Albuquerque’s students and schools,” Valentino said. “The improvements to this school and those at schools throughout Albuquerque would not be possible without the continued support of the community.”

The project also includes demolition of the B and E classroom wings at the school. Van H. Gilbert Architects designed the project and HB Construction is the general contractor.
