APS Will Make Up Snow Day Prior to May 26

Elementary and mid-school students will have conferences before, after school; high school students will have a regular day on Thursday, March 19.

The Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education Policy Committee this evening approved a proposal that will allow students to make up the day missed because of the school closure due to snow on Feb. 27 prior to May 26.

Students who attend elementary and middle schools, which had scheduled parent/teacher conferences on Feb. 27, will have their conferences either before or after school in the coming weeks; while high school students who were scheduled to have parent/teacher conferences on March 19 and 20, will be in school for a regular day of instruction on March 19. This will allow all students not to be required to make up the snow day on May 26, which was designated on the calendar as a snow make up day.

APS Chief Academic Officer Shelly Green told board members at their Wednesday night meeting that most elementary and middle schools have already started making up the conferences. “Teachers believed that if the conferences were not set up right away, the information they had to share with parents would not be relevant,” Green said.

Green said that any high school conferences set for March 19 also will have to be made up either before or after school in the coming weeks.

She noted that if the district closes schools due to weather later this semester, students will have to return to school after the Memorial Day holiday to make up the lost instructional time.

Last week the district ask parents to indicate their preference for making up the Feb. 27 snow day—either with conferences before or after school or by having students come back after Memorial day. “Parents overwhelmingly approved of the option to make up conferences before or after school,” Green told the board members.
