The Service Learning Department consists of three Service Learning teachers that work collaboratively to provide students with transformative learning experiences through community involvement, community-based research, and project implementation. This program is grounded in critical social justice principles, and service learning teachers should have a well-developed social justice framework that embraces anti-racist, anti-oppression values. Service Learning at SVA strives to support students in identifying and speaking back against the systems of oppression that impact them and their communities, while developing practical real-world skills and knowledge.
Students have a Service Learning course each year of high school which culminates in a Senior Capstone where twelfth graders research, design, and implement a senior capstone project that addresses a social justice issue in their community. Required Skills
- Applicants must be licensed through the New Mexico Public Education Department in addition to having the appropriate endorsement(s), if applicable, in each subject area.
- Ability to pass a background check

- Teachers are also advisors at SVA, and candidates with experience building relationships with students and serving as advisors are encouraged to apply
