Showcasing the Elevated Arts Schools - Sombra Del Monte Elementary School

Sombra Del Monte has a new mascot, Rocky the Roadrunner and the children are excited to include him in their learning experiences, including those as an Elevated Arts School.

Sombra Del Monte is a special school in the northeast heights of Albuquerque. According to its Principal, Heather Hinde, the children, staff and community are glad to be moving forward as everyone acclimates to in-person learning.  A major focus is to rebuild the school culture and provide a safe, welcoming environment.  During the past year, the art teacher, Rebecca Salazar, had the children make clay squares that will become an outside mural depicting a mountain scene to welcome everyone to the school.  Also, a community garden is in the early stages of development which also provides the community many opportunities to participate in school activities.  Becoming a Community School may be a future goal of the school. Sombra has a new mascot, Rocky the Roadrunner who brings fun to campus.

The staff will reassess the current programs and learning opportunities and begin the process of determining how programs such as Elevated Arts and Any Given Child Albuquerque can support their work, enhance learning and utilize our community partners.  Having both art and music provided by Albuquerque Public Schools also compliments the support provided through Elevated Arts and Any Given Child Albuquerque where Teaching Artists bring new ,exciting experiences for children to the school.
