457(b) Voluntary Retirement Savings Plan

457(b) Deferred Compensation Plan

The State of New Mexico 457(b) Deferred Compensation Plan is a voluntary, pre-tax and tax deferred retirement plan.  The plan is designed to provide a convenient and affordable way for you to invest for your retirement, allowing you to set aside money to supplement your New Mexico Educational Board retirement benefits. 

Active Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) employees are eligible to make voluntary contributions to the 457(b) Plan through payroll deduction.  The minimum contribution to the APS 457(b) Plan is $10.00 per pay period or $240.00 per year.  The maximum contribution* is set by the IRS, and is usually adjusted annually. All APS employees, whether full-time, part-time, on an hourly status, a substitute teacher or a substitute educational assistant are eligible to participate in the 457(b) Plan.   

Note: APS employees who work more than 25% of the time (.25 full-time equivalents) are required by state mandate to contribute to the New Mexico Educational Retirement Board (NMERB) pension plan.  The NMERB plan is a Defined Benefit Plan. Both you, as the employee, and APS, as the employer, contribute a percentage (established by the New Mexico State Legislature) towards your NMERB plan.  APS is contributing to your NMERB plan, therefore there is no APS match or contribution to the 457(b) Plan.  

* For 2019, the maximum annual contribution to a 457(b) Plan for employees under age 50 is $19,000.  The maximum is $25,000 for employees age 50 or over.

To enroll in the 457(b) Plan

The 457(b) retirement savings plan is through Nationwide Retirement Solutions.  To learn more about the program, visit their website for New Mexico employees at www.newmexico457dc.com.  You may also contact the Nationwide representative for central New Mexico, Clayton Puckett, at (505) 362-8814 or pucketc1@nationwide.com.  To enroll in the 457(b) Plan, you may obtain a “short-form” Enrollment Form from the APS Employee Benefits Department, or work with Nationwide to complete a “long-form” Enrollment Form. (If you complete the “short-form” Enrollment Form, you will be enrolled in a LifeCycle Portfolio based on your age; if you are interested in other investment options, you will need to contact Nationwide to complete a long-form Enrollment Form.) 

 If you decide to complete the “short-form” Enrollment Form, contact the APS Employee Benefits Department for that form (see contact information below).  Return the completed form to either Nationwide or to the APS Employee Benefits Department.

Fax the form to the attention of Ann Johnson at (505) 889-4882, mail it to the address below, or inter-office mail or hand-deliver it to the Employee Benefits Departments, Suite 115E at the Alice & Bruce King Educational Complex (formerly called City Centre).  (Please note that the post office does not deliver mail to the street address for City Centre.) You may enroll in the 457(b) Plan at any time during the year, and your contributions will start with the first paycheck of the month following the date the APS Employee Benefits Department receives notification of your enrollment.  (Nationwide Retirement Solutions will notify APS of your enrollment.)  Note:  Payroll Department deadlines for summer payroll and prior to winter break may impact this date.  

 

Contributions for the 457(b) Plan are taken out of two paychecks per month.  There are no contributions deducted from the third paycheck of any month.

To make a change to your existing 457(b) Plan contribution

To request a distribution, loan or roll-over from your 457(b) plan

Contact Nationwide Retirement Solutions in Santa Fe at (505) 989-4992 for the form to complete for your particular situation.  Questions about IRS regulations regarding when you can take a distribution or make a roll-over should be addressed with Nationwide Retirement Solutions.
