Lights On Afterschool

Thursday, October 24, 2019

We all know that the time from when school lets out to when families come home from work can be a risky time for our students.  On the other hand, afterschool programs keep our students safe, engage them in learning and activities that foster their whole child development, and provide support for our working families.  October 24th is the 20th anniversary of  Lights On Afterschool, which brings attention to the importance that after school programs have in supporting students and families.

APS is proud to join communities across America celebrating Out of School Time programs that complement our school-day instruction.  This includes academic enrichment and homework help, and tons of engaging activities focused on things like STEM, social-emotional skills building, physical activity, fine and performing arts, college and career exploration, esports, and gardening.  These offerings make a huge difference in the lives of children during extended learning hours and help the district foster a love of learning in our students.e are thrilled to have after school program offerings in almost every school in the district.  This is only made possible through support from over 25 after school program organizations that partner with us.  As well, the financial contributions from the City of Albuquerque, district Title I Department, and State funding such as the 21st Century Community Learning Centers and After School Enrichment grants are invaluable.

Our district remains committed to having our facilities available, collaborating with funders and providers, continuing processes that foster program safety and quality, and provide engaging activities that are linked to school day learning in order to allow students to practice what they have learned in the classroom.  Join us in celebrating Lights on Afterschool and the important role that Out of School Time programs play in the success of our students.
