The Langston Hughes Project is coming to town!

  • On Feb. 21 at 10:30 a.m., high school students from around Albuquerque will have the opportunity to attend a free show at Popejoy Hall on the UNM campus.
  • A benefit concert will be held at the Outpost Performance Space on Feb. 22 at 7:30 p.m., with proceeds supporting the UNM African American Student Services Scholarship Fund.

The Langston Hughes Project is a joyous multimedia concert performance created around Hughes’ kaleidoscopic jazz poem suite.  "Ask Your Mama: Twelve Moods for Jazz" -- set during the period of the Harlem Renaissance -- deals with the struggle for freedom and dignity for African American people. The show connects the historical dots between the Civil Rights Movement, the colonization of African countries, and today’s landscape.

We are excited to invite your high school students to help us observe Black History Month by attending this campus-sponsored event.

“It was an absolute pleasure to have you here at the Skirball last week.  The passion and professionalism of the quartet, the power of Hughes’ words, and the unforgettable images on the screen really brought history to life for the High School students on Friday.  Thank you so much.  I look forward to working with you again in the future.” -- Dorothy McKendrick, Educational Director, Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles, CA

“Langston Hughes helps us to better understand that we as people are more alike than we are different.  At a time when there is so much divisive rhetoric being spewed, Hughes' words offer a sense of kindness and healing.” --  Dr. Ron McCurdy, Artistic Director, The Langston Hughes Project
