 Madison Service Learning Project Benefits Roadrunner Food Bank

Tammy Crespin’s art education students focused on hunger issues that Americans, and especially New Mexicans, face in these difficult economic times. Her Fall 2011 Horizon Grant proposal was entitled Art Bowls for Hunger Awareness and had as a learning goal engaging students in the creative process while addressing an important social issue.

 Bank of Albuquerque Promotes Literacy Through Voluntarism and Library Donations

Bank of Albuquerque volunteers supported literacy events at four elementary schools during National Children’s Book Week recently. Chelwood, Dolores Gonzales, Emerson and Lew Wallace libraries were all recipients of a $500 donation for literacy from the bank.

 iPod Touches Produce Steady Improvement at Bandelier ES

Bandelier ES teacher Loretta Murphy wrote a Horizon Grant last fall entitled Integrating iPod Touches into Independent Reading To Improve Reading Ability . She was delighted when she received the grant and is even more delighted at the end of the year with the results and with the possibilities for next year.

 Teachers Appreciate Last Round of JAS Creative Grants

The JAS Creative Grants supported classroom teacher innovation for the last 18 years. The grants implemented in 2011-2012 mark the end of the program. The APS Education Foundation Horizon Awards are now providing even more support to teachers with the possibility of up to $5,000 for school teams that focus on literacy, fine arts, STEM and middle and high school activities.

 Operation School Bell Offers Support to APS Families

Operation School Bell started in 1999 as a Join-a-School partnership serving about 90 students. The signature program of the Assistance League of Albuquerque has expanded to serve 34 standardized-dress schools and other schools and departments. Thanks to the support of retail partners Fallas Paredes and Payless Shoes, the program has provided support for almost 5,000 students this school year alone.

 PLAY BALL! ABQ Isotopes Partner with Schools

Schools can schedule a visit by Orbit, the Isotopes Mascot, or Isotopes players on certain days. The visits can support literacy, staying in school, the importance of reading and education in general, or other appropriate topics. Isotopes staff are also available for career fairs.
