Teacher Loves Watching Students Achieve Their Goals

Teresa Silva of Eugene Field ES is the final Pepsi/APS Education Foundation Teacher of the Year for 2013-14.

At the beginning of each school year, Teresa Silva has her students set goals for themselves. Her favorite part of the job: watching them accomplish those goals by the time the school year ends.

"I understand that they learn at a different pace but nonetheless, I am very proud of them," said this month's Pepsi/APS Education Foundation's Teacher of the Month. "I also like to see progress being made in all subjects. I like seeing my students excited about learning new things in class, and drawing from experiences to make concepts in class more clear. It's all about making connections in all aspects of their lives."

Silva said she is proud of her school, Eugene Field Elementary, and the wonderful staff she works with everyday.

We're a great group of people who work well together, give far and beyond what is expected of us," she said. "We have master teachers and educational assistants, a wonderful counselor and principal and other great staff -- janitors, guided reading teachers, our nurse and nurse's assistant and cafeteria staff -- all working hard to make sure our students' needs are met to help them grow everyday. "

Silva says God, faith and prayer help get her through each day, as well as the unique personalities in her classroom. "I like to keep in mind that every child in my classroom is a unique person which sometimes means they don't learn the same way another child might. If it means that I have to adjust a lesson or use a new strategy to help them learn, then that is something I try to do. It helps me get through the day easier and it keeps my students in the learning zone."

For the fifth year, Pepsi, in partnership with the APS Education Foundation, recognized APS teachers for their outstanding contribution to the classroom, school and community.
