Outstanding November Employees
This month's honorees include a nurse, a custodian, a community partner coordinator, and an athletic trainer.
Albuquerque Public Schools has many dedicated professionals who devote their time and talent to helping the district meet the needs of students.
For the seventh year, the district recognizes at least a few of these outstanding employees through the Employee Recognition Program.
All staff members employed for at least six months can be nominated, though we ask that you not nominate yourself.

The honorees are being featured on APS electronic billboards around town and will be honored at a reception. They also will receive a lasting memento.
Loriel Figiel – Nurse, Kennedy Middle School
Loriel Figiel is an invaluable member of the Kennedy Middle School community, going above and beyond as a nurse to ensure the health and well-being of every student. From setting up dental clinics to participating in school teams and community initiatives, she does it all with dedication and a sense of humor that brightens everyone’s day.
“Every day she is striving to make Kennedy a safer and healthier place for our students,” her nominator shared. “Loriel's honesty and encouragement, along with her unwavering focus on students, make her an exceptional school nurse and KMS staff member.”
Last year, while splitting her time between Kennedy and Tomasita, she remained reliable and fully focused on student needs. Loriel’s ability to provide medical care, guidance, and emotional support helps students feel safe and heard. Her commitment to student health, Social Emotional Learning, and building strong connections makes her an exceptional school nurse.
“We hired Loriel as our school nurse 2 years ago, and she came from the hospital setting,” her nominator added. “I immediately found her so hardworking, easy to work with, doing everything she possibly could for the students, all while keeping a great sense of humor and being fun!”
Susana Munoz – Custodian, Atrisco Heritage Academy High School
Over the years, Susanna Munoz has gone the extra mile in her role of Custodian at Atrisco Heritage Academy High School, from taking the time to sweep the large corridor between B Building and the Arts Department, often filled with tumbleweeds and leaves, to adding personal, thoughtful touches to staff and student bathrooms with flower arrangements and decorative soap dispensers.
"Susanna is a team player who consistently shows up, never complains, and brings a positive energy to our school community," her nominator shared. “She works tirelessly, ensuring bathrooms, offices, and classrooms are always spotless and ready for the next day, no matter how late it gets."
Two years ago, Susanna proudly shared her hard work in earning her citizenship, an achievement that reflects her incredible dedication and perseverance. With her impeccable work ethic and kind, humble nature, Susanna exemplifies what it means to be a truly outstanding member of our school community.
Susanna’s impact goes beyond her daily duties—her dedication inspires those around her. Whether it’s covering shifts, arriving early, or lending a helping hand to staff and students, she consistently makes the school a better place. Her loyalty and commitment to her work are deeply appreciated, and she truly deserves to be celebrated for all she does.
Jami Ramos – Community Partner Coordinator, McKinney-Vento Program
Community Partner Coordinator Jami Ramos is a champion for students experiencing homelessness, ensuring their educational rights are protected and their immediate needs addressed.
“Her unwavering support of our students and her commitment to fostering community partnerships make her an invaluable asset to the McKinney-Vento team,” her supervisor shared.
Jami ensures that community partners understand the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act and work collaboratively to provide the necessary referrals, so students can access their education and reach their academic potential. Her exceptional perseverance and data-driven approach set her apart, while her extensive knowledge of student and family needs reflects her attention to detail and deep care for the students she serves.
“Jami is a coalition builder and an advocate in our community,” her nominator noted, emphasizing her commitment to collaboration and her willingness to share her expertise with colleagues, schools, and community partners.
Through her dedication, Jami has created meaningful connections that positively impact the educational outcomes of students experiencing homelessness. Her tireless efforts and advocacy ensure that no student is left behind, making her an essential part of the McKinney-Vento team and a true inspiration to those around her.
Luisa Storey – Athletic Trainer, West Mesa High School
“Storey,” as student-athletes affectionately call West Mesa High School Athletic Trainer Luisa Storey, is the heart and soul of West Mesa High School athletics.
“She is 100% committed to her athletes—all sports, all year, all the time!” her nominator shared.
Storey consistently stays late, makes time for every student-athlete, and truly cares for their well-being, both on and off the field. Her dedication is personal—she has supported the nominator's daughter through four years and three sports, always showing up with a big smile and unwavering encouragement.
What sets Storey apart is her ability to anticipate the needs of her athletes and her genuine investment in their success. Beyond mental, emotional, and physical health, she reminds students of the importance of thriving in the classroom and preparing for life after high school.
“She’s always busy but never complains,” her nominator said.
Storey’s energy and enthusiasm make her an invaluable role model. Whether she’s cheering for the Mustangs or helping an athlete through recovery, her positive attitude inspires everyone around her. The students, staff, families, and athletes of West Mesa High School deeply appreciate her, and they are proud to celebrate her commitment to excellence!

You can nominate an employee by filling out the Employee Recognition online application. Nominations must be completed by someone other than the nominee. Self-nominations are not eligible for consideration.
Award recipients will be selected monthly by a Peer Praise Task Force.
