
Outstanding January Employees
This month's honorees include a secretary, a head custodian, a crisis resource counselor and an athletic trainer.
Albuquerque Public Schools has many dedicated professionals who devote their time and talent to helping the district meet the needs of students. For the seventh year, the district recognizes at least a few of these outstanding employees through the Employee Recognition Program. All staff members employed for at least six months can be nominated, though we ask that you not nominate yourself.

The honorees are being featured on APS electronic billboards around town and will be honored at a reception. They also will receive a lasting memento.
Pauline Castillo – Secretary, Dolores Gonzales Elementary School
Pauline Castillo, affectionately known as Ms. Linda, is the heartbeat of Dolores Gonzales Elementary School. For 24 years, she has been the cornerstone of the school community, seamlessly managing the office while creating a safe, welcoming space for students.
As the school principal shared, “She is always present, organizes our sub coverage, takes care of all logistics as well as creates a safe space for students who just need a hug.”
Ms. Linda’s dedication to the traditions of Dolores Gonzales is unmatched, and she is the go-to person for all things school-related. Despite being eligible for retirement, she continues to prioritize her role and shows up every day with a calm demeanor and a wealth of knowledge. Ms. Linda’s commitment, compassion, and unwavering presence have left an indelible mark on the school.
John Duran – Head Custodian, Desert Ridge Middle School
John Duran exemplifies dedication, reliability, and pride in his work as head custodian at Desert Ridge Middle School. Having recently stepped into this role, John has already made a significant impact on the school community.
“In my 33 years in APS, John truly stands out as one of the best custodians I have worked with at a school,” the Desert Ridge dean of students said in John’s nomination.
John’s leadership has stabilized the custodial team and earned the admiration of staff and faculty. His work ethic is unmatched, and his personable nature makes him a joy to be around. The dean of students shared, “He believes that kids and staff deserve to have a clean school, and it shows in his work.” After years of custodial turnover, John’s presence has been a breath of fresh air, both literally and figuratively.
Jennifer Hart – Crisis Resource Counselor, APS Counseling Department
Jennifer Hart shines in her role as the district’s Crisis Resource Counselor, providing unwavering support during some of the most challenging moments schools face. From assisting in the wake of traumatic events to supporting students expressing suicidal ideation, Jennifer’s work is invaluable.
A coworker shared, “Most people shy away from crises, but Jen meets them head-on and with true professionalism.”
This year alone, Jennifer has coordinated recovery efforts for nearly 20 crises, including supporting schools without counselors or nurses. Her dedication extends beyond immediate crises, as she works with administrators to assist staff and students in recovery. Jennifer’s commitment to the district’s well-being is unmatched, and her work has a lasting impact on the community.
Enrique Ochoa – Athletic Trainer, Volcano Vista High School
Enrique Ochoa demonstrated heroism and skill when he saved a coach’s life in the fall using CPR and an AED. The coach collapsed on the field due to a cardiac event, but thanks to Enrique’s quick action and expertise, he survived.
“It’s not every day that an employee saves another employee’s life on their campus,” a fellow athletic trainer said.
Enrique’s life-saving actions underscore the importance of preparedness, and his dedication reflects the highest standards of athletic training.
How to nominate an employee
You can nominate an employee by filling out the Employee Recognition online application. Nominations must be completed by someone other than the nominee. Self-nominations are not eligible for consideration.
Award recipients will be selected monthly by a Peer Praise Task Force.
