This month's honorees include a bookkeeper, a director of student services, an assistant principal and a transition specialist.
Albuquerque Public Schools is proud of the many dedicated professionals who work tirelessly to support students. Now in its seventh year, the Employee Recognition Program honors some of these outstanding staff members.

The honorees are being featured on APS electronic billboards around town and will be honored at a reception. They also will receive a lasting memento.
Ramona Aragon – Bookkeeper, Cibola High School
Ramona Aragon goes above and beyond to ensure that every group managing funds through the Cibola High School bookkeeping office has the support they need to succeed. She not only helps organizations navigate policies and procedures with ease but also works tirelessly to make the process as smooth as possible. As one colleague put it, "Ramona plans to retire this summer, and I don’t know what I’m going to do without her."
What sets Ramona apart is her unwavering sense of fairness. She understands that every dollar passing through her office supports Cibola students, and she is committed to ensuring funds are used ethically and in students’ best interests. Her dedication to integrity and student success has made a lasting impact on the school community.
Marcella Jones – Director, APS Student Services Center
A model of kindness, selflessness and dedication, Marcella Jones consistently goes above and beyond for every student, staff member and parent who walks through the doors of the Student Service Center. “Marcella is the most caring and selfless woman I have ever met,” one colleague said.
Her extensive experience in school environments makes her an invaluable resource, as she expertly navigates the complexities of the Student Handbook and Procedural Directives. More than just a knowledgeable leader, Marcella leads with heart, ensuring that every individual she assists feels heard, supported and valued.
Ami Montoya – Assistant Principal, Mission Avenue STEM Magnet Elementary School
When Ami Montoya arrived at Mission Avenue STEM Magnet Elementary, the school was facing significant challenges. Instead of backing away, she rolled up her sleeves and got to work, determined to make a difference.
“I love the fact that she is a team player and never asks you to do anything that she won’t do,” her colleague said. Whether it's supervising the playground, helping in the cafeteria, or supporting staff and students in any way necessary, she leads by example. She firmly believes that respect is earned, not given, and fosters an environment where every student and staff member feels valued.
Kathryn Murphy – Transition Specialist, APS Special Education
Kathryn Murphy is a dedicated Transition Specialist who goes above and beyond to help students navigate their paths beyond high school. She provides crucial guidance on graduation requirements, career training and community resources, ensuring that students and families have access to the support they need.
“After meeting with Ms. Murphy, the students have a much more positive outlook on their lives,” one colleague said. Kathryn’s commitment to empowering students is evident in the noticeable positive changes within the school community. Thanks to her, students leave her sessions with a renewed sense of purpose and the assurance that they have a strong support system.
How to nominate an employee
You can nominate an employee by filling out the Employee Recognition online application. Nominations must be completed by someone other than the nominee. Self-nominations are not eligible for consideration.
Award recipients will be selected monthly by a Peer Praise Task Force.
