Foundation Board of Directors Named Best Non-Profit Board
The APS Education Foundation is proud to announce that its Board of Directors was named the 2021 Best Non-profit Board by Albuquerque Business First for its philanthropy, leadership, and generosity.
Upon learning they had received the 2021 Philanthropy Award, Board members said they were humbled and appreciated the recognition for their hard work and contributions to the APS community.
The award was announced on January 25.
“This is really awesome and well-deserved!” said APS Interim Superintendent Scott Elder. “We are grateful to Foundation Board members for all they do for APS students and staff.”
“Our Foundation Board members are outstanding because of their unwavering commitment, passion, and drive,” said Foundation Executive Director Shannon Barnhill. “They work relentlessly toward improving student opportunities and teacher resources throughout APS.”
Board members hail from various professional backgrounds, from the banking industry to media marketing. Board members are highly credentialed and well respected within the greater community.
The Foundation Board stands out because its members include APS students with strong leadership qualities and academic excellence. Of the numerous students from across the district nominated to serve on the Board, three high school students were selected and invited to join the Board, receiving full voting rights.
The unique make-up of the Board strengthens its ability to give and serve. Board members rose to action during the pandemic, helping to meet the rising need among APS students and families for shelter and meals. The Board created an Emergency Crisis Fund to support student, school, and department needs due to drastic cuts in state and local funding. Even before the pandemic, the Board addressed evident needs to improve student outcomes.
“APSEF is an incredible resource for the APS teachers, staff, and students. They are greatly appreciated, and the award is well deserved,” said APS Board of Education President Dr. David Peercy.
“I am extremely humbled by this honor and by our Board,” said Barnhill. “Their devotion to our students, families, and educators truly speaks volumes, and this award is a testament to their commitment, selflessness, and the many hours they have graciously given. They are the difference this community needs, and now others will know of their work and become more familiar with the Foundation and our mission!”
Barnhill also recognized the Foundation’s small staff, which has worked with the Board to support the APS community. Along with meeting the basic needs of students and families, the APS Education Foundation awards nearly half a million dollars a year in grant awards to help APS educators bring the curriculum to life and engage students in STEM, Literacy, Fine Arts, student organizations, school climate, and other co-curricular activities.
The APS Education Foundation is a 501(3) non-profit organization established in 1995 to partner with the community to invest in innovative and enhanced learning opportunities to help APS students reach their full potential.
The Board of Directors will be recognized on March 4 at 10 a.m. Learn more about the virtual event at Albuquerque Business First.
