Four years ago, Carolina Gonzales wrote, “Our project focus is to become stewards of mariachi education in APS to our district, our state, and our southwest region. We would like to participate, and compete in as many mariachi conferences and festivals as possible and will prepare ourselves by executing skilled and artistic performances in our community at every opportunity.”  The students continue to raise money for these experiences by playing at events, including Gold Bar. Ms. Gonzales has since been working with middle schools to share mariachi music and instruction with younger students. 

Now, as a Best In Class nominee, Ms. Gonzales is eager to expand mariachi instruction and states, "Mariachi Herencia is an ambassador of the communities of Albuquerque’s South Valley and Westgate with great pride. As we continue representing Albuquerque at local and statewide performances, our plan is to extend our success to our feeder schools. If chosen, we would expand our program with peer mentoring and mariachi clubs at our elementary and middle school feeder schools to build a bridge to our high school program. We know early access is the equalizer in the arts and we are ready to do our part to make it accessible to our communities. The foundation we help create will transfer to all areas of academic life far beyond mariachi music. We are certain that our efforts will reverberate for decades to follow.
