About Accessibility and Color Contrast

Color should never be used as the only visual means to convey information. For example, a required form field has an asterisk to indicate it's required instead of just having red text.

Colors should have high contrast so that they work for individuals with color-blindness (e.g., black text on a white background.)  WCAG 2.0 Level AA requires a contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text.

  • Normal Text: Normal text is considered to be 1em, equivalent to 12 point, equivalent to 16px.
  • Large Text: Large text is defined as 14 point (typically 18.66px) and bold or larger, or 18 point (typically 24px) or larger.
  • Incidental: Text or images of text that are pure decoration, or that are part of a picture that contains significant other visual content, have no contrast requirement.
  • Logotypes: Text that is part of a logo or brand name has no contrast requirement.
