College and Career Readiness

All students will graduate – without the need for remediation – having the skills, attitudes and characteristics to prepare them for post-secondary education, careers and life in an ever-evolving global community.

Focus Areas

  • Align instructional materials to standards, provide academic support to students not meeting standards, and utilize research-based instructional strategies
  • Develop schools, schedules and course offerings to retain students and improve their success rates
  • Create smooth transitions especially for students moving from one level to the next
  • Align assessments with college and career readiness strategies
  • Develop partnerships that extend student learning beyond the classroom including internships, apprenticeships and on-the-job training

Strategy 1: Evidence-based instructional practices built on CCSS in all classrooms

  • Culturally relevant curricula aligned to CCSS, and responsive to student population
  • Systemic support for students to meet or exceed grade-level standards
  • Utilize time to support student learning
  • Utilize time in a way that supports student learning
  • Sequence of courses to meet school and individual student needs
  • Unleash the power of technology to transform and personalize teaching and learning

Strategy 2: Aligned Student Assessments to CCSS K-12

Action Steps

  • Grading reflects students’ ability to meet standards
  • Develop and implement Short-cycle  Common assessments

  • Growth in short cycle assessment
  • Decrease in discrepancies between classroom grades and formal assessments

Strategy 3: Support and equip teachers for success in providing rigorous instruction

Action Steps

  • Provide PD on culturally relevant standards-based instruction and differentiation
  • Continued support of teachers to ensure strong pre-, first, re-teach and acceleration
  • Personalized teacher learning to support career-long growth including on-boarding, sustaining and leadership
  • Provide time for vertical and horizontal content alignment and articulation
  • Infuse existing and new technology strategies and resources to transform classroom and teacher learning

Strategy 4: Provide equity of access to a variety of programming and choice throughout the district

Action Steps

  • Create K-12 specialize pathways of magnet schools based on community needs
  • Align and expand bilingual programs
  • Expand opportunities for blended learning
  • Create opportunities for all students to explore careers and application of necessary skills
  • Support equitable access to AP and dual credit course offerings

  • Student enrollment increase and dropout rate decrease
  • National student clearinghouse data on post-secondary persistence
