Wishes for a Joyous Winter Break

A holiday message from Superintendent Raquel Reedy

I grew up in a small family – just me, my mom and my grandparents. But we were embraced by a large, loving community, especially during the holidays when we joined friends and neighbors to eat, sing, play and rejoice.

I remember night after night of Las Posadas with plenty of mouth-watering food – biscochitos, tamales, menudo – and piñatas filled with candy. There was always an ice pack nearby because someone inevitably would be struck by an enthusiastic stick-wielding, blindfolded child.

I still have a small family, but just as in my childhood, I am surrounded by a caring community. At no time is this more apparent than in the weeks before winter break.

Even as we busily wrap up the semester, you – the staff, students and families of APS – find time to befriend the lonely, comfort the hurting, reach out to those in need. You are there with music and song, packages and gifts, food and money and, mostly, your time and heart.

Just as my neighbors and friends in Laredo, Texas, opened their doors to my little family all those Christmases ago, you wrap your arms around the APS community, spreading love and caring during the holidays and throughout the year.

Know that your efforts haven’t gone unnoticed; your generosity hasn’t gone unappreciated.

To you, your family, your neighbors, your friends, I wish a joyous winter break. I wish you rest, comfort, and ease of mind. I wish you health and happiness. I wish you all the best.

Happy Holidays!
