The Berna Facio Professional Development Complex

In her weekly message, Supt. Reedy talks about the new training center for APS employees.

A few weeks ago, I was the keynote speaker at a principals' meeting at the Berna Facio Professional Development Complex. In addition to my message, the morning session included a panel with students who serve on the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Committee as well as a presentation by Educators Rising, a program that introduces high school students to teaching.

The rest of the day was filled with breakout sessions on a variety of topics from trauma-informed interventions and positive behavior strategies to multi-level systems of support and differentiated instruction strategies. These informative sessions provided training, guidance, and resources for nearly 150 school leaders.

It was the kind of professional development our educators need and deserve. And it was in a setting that allows for maximum learning.

The Berna Facio Professional Development Complex is a great asset to our community. Nicknamed the teacher training center, it really is a professional development facility for all of our employees, a place where they can learn and collaborate and grow. They no longer have to sit on kindergarten chairs or in cold gyms with bad acoustics or at cafeteria tables that, quite frankly, are a little tricky for some of us to get in and out of.

The training center makes a strong statement: We are professionals who take our own personal growth and education seriously. No one can argue that we don’t want the most qualified teachers in our classrooms, that we shouldn’t have well-trained administrators running our schools. Our students deserve the best.

The training center has a central meeting hall for up to 500 people and nine breakout rooms equipped with cutting edge technology. It is a lovely building with lots of natural lighting, wide flexible concourses, a full kitchen and plenty of parking.

Don’t take my word for it. Join us for the grand opening this Saturday, April 27, beginning at 9:30 a.m. I’ll be joined by current and former board members as well as the family of Berna Facio. For those of you who don’t know, Berna was a long-time APS bilingual resource and English as a Second Language teacher. After retiring, she served on the APS Board of Education from 2001-2009. She passed away shortly after her service on the board.

Saturday’s grand opening will include a Student Music and Art Showcase. If you can’t make the grand opening, stop by the training center from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 29-May 3 to see the artwork on display. You will be amazed by the talent of our young people under the guidance of our amazing teachers.

My hope is that you and all APS employees will have an opportunity to spend time at the training center in the coming days, weeks and years as you continue to develop as professionals in service to the students of Albuquerque Public Schools.
