Happy Holidays

Read Superintendent Reedy's holiday message.

The last day before winter break is usually hectic, with lots of commotion, excitement, and anticipation. It’s a time of year when I find myself reflecting on the past and dreaming about the year ahead. It’s also a perfect time to remind people how much they mean to us.

I want to thank you. Our positions within the district vary, but we all work for our students. Your professionalism, generosity, and commitment to creating better opportunities for our students is greatly appreciated.

As I take stock of all there is to be grateful for this year, I am reminded of the monumental steps Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and the New Mexico Legislature took to acknowledge and compensate public school employees for the work carried out daily in our schools. We hope the governor and lawmakers know how much their support means to us.

Another thank you goes out to everyone who took the time to vote in the November 5th bond and mill levy election. We asked voters to approve funds that will be used for repairs like fixing leaky roofs, removing lead from drinking fountains and fixing heating and cooling systems. The request was approved, and we now have the resources to take care of our most basic and urgent needs.

The seven elected officials who spend an enormous amount of time serving on the APS Board of Education also deserve our gratitude. Our board members are some of our biggest advocates. They celebrate our students and teachers, listen to the public’s hopes and desires for the district and make decisions that impact us all.

Finally, as you know, this will be my last year as your superintendent. I won’t be here to share a holiday message next year, but the life lessons gained from my experience will stay with me forever. Through our challenges and triumphs, I now have a deeper appreciation for community. So much of what I’ve witnessed in this job has been life-affirming. Compassion, empathy, and selflessness drive our district.
