It Was a Very Good Year

Supt. Reedy's final employee message for the 2017-18 school year.

To help prepare this final message of the school year, I looked back on the three dozen messages I have sent to you since August. Wow! What a year it has been. We certainly have faced our share of challenges, as I predicted we would, but also we have experienced so, so much success. I figured that would be the case because, as I stated in the very first message I sent this school year: “I know the people who work in our schools and offices and kitchens, on our grounds and buildings and buses. People like you who are dedicated, who care, who believe.”

We started the year with a plan for improving our schools. We established Learning Zones that take a more neighborly approach to school support and we set priorities nicknamed the Supt’s Big 5 to help improve student success: Early Learning, College and Career Readiness, the Whole Child, Attendance and Community and Parent Engagement. These were, and still are, the foundation of our Academic Master Plan.

And then we put the plan in motion, taking concrete steps to improve the academic outcomes of our students. For example, I told you about an elementary school that was preparing its students for college and careers from the minute they walked through the door and about a middle school that got students to pledge to attend school every day.

I let you know about all of the tools we have put in place to make sure families are involved in the academic journey of their children and about our many neighbors and community partners who work with us for the betterment of our students by providing time, money, programs, support and love.

I shared with you information on 90-Day Plans and instructional rounds and the Every Student Succeeds Act.

We had some fun along the way, too. We came together to look into the sun (with protective eyewear, of course) during a rare solar eclipse. We hosted a hugely popular School Choice Fair to help families find the right fit for their children. And I became a tweeter as part of a successful campaign that showed our community what a day in school looks like.

Yes, it was a very good year. Thank you for making it so.

Now it is time for a breather. Take care of yourself and your family. Enjoy the warm summer days and cool evenings. And have some fun!

I’ll do the same, then let's get back together ready to continue the hard yet rewarding work ahead of us.

Happy Summer!
