Positivity

This school year, I will make an even more deliberate effort to focus on the good that is happening in our schools. I recommend you do the same," Superintendent Reedy wrote in her weekly message.

I recently shared with you some of the targets we set for Albuquerque Public Schools this school year: improved reading and math scores, more graduates, better attendance, greater family involvement.

Now, I want to share a personal goal: positivity. This school year, I will make an even more deliberate effort to focus on the good that is happening in our schools. I recommend you do the same.

That’s not to say we won’t address problems when they arise, nor will we ignore challenges. But, too often we get caught in a negative spiral that casts a shadow on all the good we do. When in reality, almost all we do is truly extraordinary and even life-changing!

Think about it. We provide free education to children of all needs and backgrounds. We keep them safe. We keep them engaged. We tap their curiosity. We challenge them to be better. We open doors to possibility and prosperity.

Don’t lose sight of the accomplishments, big and small, that occur all day every day in our classrooms, on our campuses, and in our offices across the district. From the child who writes her name for the very first time to a voluntary water-testing program that makes sure our drinking water is safe, we have much to tout.

Take the start of the school year. Yes, there were a few glitches, but it really was among the smoothest beginnings I have experienced in more than four decades in public education.

Did you know we have a teacher vacancy rate of less than 3 percent! We hired about 450 teachers this summer, 70 more than last year at this time and a hundred more than the year before. All amid a national teacher shortage! And we are working to increase the number of substitute teachers as well to have a qualified educator in every classroom every day.

Registering students for school is becoming easier thanks to our online registration system. More than 68,000 of our families now have active accounts. This allows them to update their contact information at any time, reduces redundancy in registration paperwork and reduces paper, too.

And speaking of reducing paper, the district is switching from paper to digital flyers, providing our families with information on a whole host of resources and activities in a more modern, accessible, and eco-friendly format.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Every one of our employees – whether you work in our schools or in support of our schools – contributes to the success of Albuquerque Public Schools.

Now it’s your turn. I encourage you to focus on your accomplishments and on those of the students you serve. Let that drive your work. Don't get sidetracked by ill-informed or incorrect comments or criticisms. Our jobs are vitally important and demanding. They also are often misunderstood. A little positivity will go a long way in making this a great school year for all.
