JE - Student Attendance

Albuquerque Public Schools shall comply with New Mexico state statute, as outlined in the Attendance for Success Act, which establishes the right for all children who range in age from five (5), prior to 12:01 a.m. on September 1 of the current school year and students under the age of eighteen (18) years to receive a free public education unless that student has graduated from high school, received a high school equivalency credential or withdrawn from school on a hardship waiver. A parent may give written, signed permission for the school-age person to leave school between the ages of sixteen (16) and eighteen (18) in case of hardship approved by the superintendent.

The district shall create a procedural directive and procedures for attendance to include an early warning system to identify chronic absenteeism or excessive absenteeism and guidelines for schools to employ attendance improvement plans to keep students in an educational setting and assist a student’s family to remove barriers to the student’s school attendance.
