Notice: This policy was reviewed, revised, and/or renamed. We provide this revision for historic purposes only. Please see our current policies and procedural directives.
The superintendent, or his/her designee, shall develop and establish an Alternative Demonstration of Competency for the graduating students of 2014, 2015 and 2016 in compliance with state statute and regulation for review, amendment and approval by the Board of Education. This policy shall be applicable only to students who are members of the 2014, 2015 and 2016 graduating classes and shall be null and void for all other graduating students.
All students shall be required to demonstrate competency in the subject areas required by state law to receive a diploma of excellence. Students may demonstrate competency by achieving passing scores on assessments as provided by the New Mexico Public Education Department. Students who are unable to demonstrate competency using passing scores on assessments provided by the New Mexico Public Education Department may elect to demonstrate competency through the Albuquerque Public Schools created and approved alternative demonstration.
The superintendent, or his/her designee, shall guarantee that the Alternative Demonstration of Competency is a rigorous portfolio of standards-based indicators. This portfolio may include, but is not limited to:
- Performance-based assessments;
- Admissions to college;
- Meeting benchmarks outlined in a student’s individualized education plan; or
- Teacher-administered final exams.
Students who are members of the 2014, 2015 and 2016 graduating classes who believe they have demonstrated competency by another method not adopted may appeal to the superintendent, or his/her designee, and shall be deemed to have met competency in that area if the appeal is successful.
Students who are members of the 2014, 2015 and 2016 graduating classes may demonstrate competency during school or up to five years after they exit school.
