FE Naming, Renaming and Dedication of Facilities - August 2012 Revision

The Board of Education shall determine the names of schools and other facilities governed by the Albuquerque Public Schools.  The Board of Education shall not, unless there are extenuating circumstances, name facilities, schools or portions of facilities and schools after living individuals.  When a school or facility is closed or sold, the Board of Education shall reserve the right to preserve the name for future buildings or to retire the name so it is no longer used.

Selection of a Name for a New Facility

Names of new facilities shall be approved or denied by the Board of Education after public opinion has been solicited through a committee that includes representation from the Board of Education, administration and the community, staff and student population of the proposed facility.

Requests for a Change in the Name of a Facility

A request for a facility name change shall be approved or denied by the Board of Education upon receipt of a request from the superintendent or his/her designee. The Board of Education may consider a name change if the majority of its members agree that there is a compelling reason to do so.

Requests for Naming or Renaming a Portion of a Facility

A request to name or rename a library, special facility, or a portion of a facility shall be approved or denied by the Board of Education upon receipt of a petition from the superintendent or his/her designee.

Requests for Dedication of a Portion of a Facility

A request to dedicate a portion of a facility to acknowledge significant monetary or in-kind contributions of an individual, organization or business shall require approval by the Board of Education upon receipt of a petition from the superintendent or his/her designee.
