Deborah Elder serves as Executive Director of Innovation, charged with developing new programs and schools of choice within the district.  She brings to the Office of Innovation a commitment to developing personalized learning experiences for students; overcome obstacles to achieve a new vision of education; and create an innovative approach to rigorous learning for all students.

In addition to designing, developing and implementing new programs and schools of choice, Mrs. Elder oversees the APS Charter Schools Office, which supports 20 district-authorized charter schools in Albuquerque.

Mrs. Elder’s expertise has been shared in multiple national venues, from presentations at the Learning Forward Annual Conference to designing and implementing professional development for principals at the Discovery Education Principal’s Symposium around transforming school culture for digital age learning.  She received the Southwest Branch of the International Dyslexia Association’s Leadership in Literacy Award in 2009, and Zuni received recognition in 2011 for the commitment to parent and community involvement from Leadership Albuquerque.

Mrs. Elder has spent the past seven years as principal at Zuni Elementary, a nationally recognized APS magnet school for technology and communication.  She served at E.G. Ross Elementary as assistant principal and began her career in APS as a teacher at Carlos Rey in 1993.  She spent three years in the APS Research, Development and Accountability Department where she helped schools use data to evaluate programs, interpret assessments and guide professional development with a goal of improving student achievement.
