APS Superintendent Job Posted

Applications are due Feb. 24.

The Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education is now accepting applications for superintendent. The board is seeking “an outstanding educational leader to serve as the District’s superintendent beginning July 1, 2020.”

A link to the application is posted to the APS website: Apply for the Superintendent Position.

The link sends applicants to the website of HYA (Hazard Young Attea Associates), the search firm hired by the board to find a successor to Superintendent Raquel Reedy, who announced her plan to retire at the end of the school year.

Applications are due by Feb. 24. Applicants should be aware that all submitted applications fall under the Inspection of Public Records guidelines in New Mexico and will be released to the public.

The job overview includes results from community meetings and an online survey that collected public input regarding the qualities and characteristics desired in the new superintendent. The criteria will be used throughout the search process of vetting and screening candidates, as well as forming the outline for the Board interviews.

Desired characteristics include:

A student-centered leader who puts the needs of children first by:

  • Ensuring a strong academic program focused on continuous improvement in key learning areas.
  • Creating a culture that supports the social/emotional growth and well being of children.
  • Supporting the education of the whole child through the arts, music, and physical health.
  • Valuing student voice in district decision-making.

A collaborative, stakeholder-focused manager who embodies a district culture that:

  • Recognizes the contributions of and seeks input from all staff groups throughout the District.
  • Establishes and sustains community partnerships and cultivates relationships with the business community.
  • Values equity, integrity, and transparency.
  • Promotes safety and security.
  • Takes responsibility for decisions and actions.
  • Supports strong site-based shared leadership.

A life-long learner and educator who:

  • Has extensive background and experience in education, preferably at the classroom, school, and district levels.
  • Deeply values and understands the richness of a diverse student/community population.
  • Has worked in a large, diverse urban school system. A proactive, articulate communicator who:
  • Is media savvy and promotes the APS brand with parents, staff, business/governmental leaders, and community agencies at the local and state levels.
  • Establishes and employs a communication flow of critical issues, actions, and decisions on an ongoing basis and during times of crisis.
  • Is a systems thinker that coordinates the overall direction of APS and aligns central office operations and processes.

Once the recruitment window closes at the end of February, applicant names will be released to the public, semi-finalists will be chosen, background checks will be completed and the board will conduct its first round of interviews. From there, finalists will be chosen for second interviews and public engagement.

The board hopes to announce the new superintendent by mid-May. The new superintendent would assume responsibilities on July 1.
