The APS Board of Education will conduct interviews on March 19 and 20

The Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education on Wednesday selected five semifinalists to interview for the superintendent’s job while staff begins background checks. Interviews are slated for March 19 and 20. Finalists are expected to be named on March 21.

The five semifinalists, chosen from a pool of 39 applicants, are:

  • Vickie Bannerman, Principal of Albuquerque Public Schools Volcano Vista High School
  • Michelle Cavazos, Chief Officer for Academics and Social Emotional Learning for Austin Independent School District
  • Kimberly Finke, Principal of Albuquerque Public Schools Whittier Elementary School
  • James McIntyre, Assistant Professor & Director, Center for Educational Leadership at the University of Tennessee
  • Bolgen Vargas, Self-Employed Consultant and former Superintendent for Rochester City School District in New York

Applications for the semifinalists are posted to the APS Superintendent Search website.

The board is seeking an outstanding educational leader to succeed Superintendent Raquel Reedy, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

Finalists will be interviewed by the board for a second time and will participate in public engagement. APS families, students, staff, and members of the community are encouraged to attend these public events (dates and locations to be determined) where they will hear from the finalists and have a chance to ask questions.

The board hopes to announce the news superintendent by mid-May. The news superintendent would assume the job on July 1.

Information about the superintendent search, including a timeline, is posted to the APS Superintendent Search website.
