Frequently Asked Questions

Who is conducting the superintendent search? How does the search firm work with the Board of Education?  What is the role of the search firm?

A search firm will be selected through a Request for Proposal (RFP) recommended by Procurement and chosen by the Board of Education.  Search firms are professional search teams that work with boards to develop a promotional brochure and application form that reflects desired criteria set by staff, families, students, the community and the Board of Education for a new superintendent.

Is the search national?

Yes, in order to attract a wide variety of qualified candidates, the search is national and not limited to any particular region.  However, the Board of Education has made it clear that the successful candidate will have a thorough understanding and knowledge of New Mexico and the issues that the district and the state face.

How will the opinions and concerns of parents and community members be taken into account in choosing the next superintendent?

Like the vast majority of school boards doing superintendent searches, the APS Board of Education will ask everyone involved – teachers, parents, students, staff, community members, and business and government leaders – to kick off the search process by sharing their views about the district’s strengths, challenges, and desired characteristics of a superintendent.  After the input process is completed, the information will be used to create a superintendent profile.  Once the profile is approved by the Board of Education it will be used as hiring criteria to screen, interview and ultimately select the new superintendent.

How many candidates does the board interview?

Most boards select three or four candidates based on applicants for the position or candidates who have not applied but meet the criteria.  The search firm will present a qualified applicant pool to the board and will help the board conduct the first and second-round interviews, the public forums and assessments of leadership skills.

How long will the search take?

On October 8, 2019, the Board of Education heard Superintendent Reedy’s retirement announcement.  The search began in earnest immediately.  The goal is to have a new superintendent in place by April 2020 with an official start date of July 1, 2020.

How can I get involved?

There are two times in the search process that are important times for your involvement:

  1. The first opportunity is in November 2019 regarding the development of the qualifications for the superintendent position through community forums and the survey.  Input from forum participants and community members who complete surveys will be used to create a superintendent profile.  Once the profile is approved by the Board of Education it will be used as hiring criteria to screen, interview and ultimately select the new superintendent.
  2. The second opportunity will be in March/April 2020 when you will have the opportunity to meet and listen to the individual APS superintendent candidates at several community forums.  Audience members will be among the first in the community to meet the top candidates for the position of Albuquerque Public Schools superintendent.  You will be able to submit questions and to provide your input on the candidates.  Written input from audiences will be provided to members of the Board of Education for its consideration.
