JOB DESCRIPTION: School Nurse

The School Nurse is essential in maintaining a healthy school environment, providing direct care to students, and working closely with staff to support student success. This position starts part-time but has the potential to transition into a full-time role depending on the needs of the school. The nurse is responsible for administering necessary medications and treatments throughout the day and addressing students' health needs. The School Nurse also serves as a key resource for families, staff, and the school community, offering guidance on best practices to promote student health and well-being. In addition to basic care, the nurse helps create an environment focused on both physical and mental health, supporting students as they manage health challenges. This role also plays a crucial part in promoting students’ academic success by ensuring their health, safety, and wellness. The nurse assists with developmental milestones, helps manage chronic conditions, addresses potential health issues, provides case management, and works with families and staff to strengthen students' self-advocacy, self-management, and learning skills. The School Nurse is committed to ensuring students are healthy, supported, and ready to succeed.

This position reports directly to the Director of Operations.

Required Skills

Siembra Leadership School Nurse is Responsible for:

Health Services:
*Coordinate student physical exams in collaboration with licensed healthcare providers. (Note: In NM, comprehensive
physicals must be conducted by an MD, NP, or PA.)
*Assess and treat everyday illness and minor injuries.
*Provide comprehensive health services to students and staff.
*Administer medications and treatments per physician orders and in line with parental consent and school policy.
*Manage chronic health conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, allergies).
*Conduct regular health screenings (vision, hearing, etc.).
*Develop and implement Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) for students with special health needs.

Promoting Health and Wellness:
*Promote health and wellness through education, prevention, and counseling.
*Educate students, staff, and families on health topics and healthy behaviors.
*Support wellness activities and initiatives to foster a healthy school environment.

Collaboration and Advocacy:
*Collaborate with educators and staff to support student health needs.
*Serve as a liaison between the school, families, and healthcare providers.
*Advocate for student health and well-being.
*Train staff to support individual student health plans and needs.

Safety and Emergency Preparedness:
*Respond to emergencies and provide first aid.
*Develop and implement emergency care plans.
*Ensure alignment with school safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Documentation and Record Keeping:
*Maintain accurate, confidential student health records, including immunization compliance.
*Document assessments, interventions, and follow-up care.
*Oversee implementation of medication policies and procedures.

Expanded Responsibilities:
*Identify health barriers to learning, including social, emotional, and economic factors.
*Initiate and monitor quality assurance processes for programs like Presumptive Eligibility/Medicaid Onsite Application
Assistance (PE/MOSAA), as directed.
*Supervise, train, and assign duties to Health Assistants as needed.
*Initiate referrals to medical and mental health providers and follow through with remediation and support.
*Serve as a consultant to identify community resources, address environmental hazards, and ensure school safety.
*Implement communicable disease control policies.
*Participate in student evaluations for special education services and other relevant teams/committees.
*Collaborate with school-based health personnel and external agencies to coordinate care.

Required/Minimum Qualifications:
*Licensed RN in the state of New Mexico (License 700, 701, 702, or 703).
*Bachelor's Degree in Nursing; or ADN with 3+ years of experience and current enrollment in BSN program; or ADN with
a Bachelor's in a health-related field.
*Valid New Mexico School Nurse license (New Mexico Department of Education).
*Current CPR and First Aid certification.
*Minimum 1 year of experience in nursing or community nursing.
*Experience working with children/teens, families, and multi-disciplinary teams.
*Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
*Knowledge of school health policies, FERPA/confidentiality regulations, and state immunization laws.
*Ability to collaborate with diverse populations with empathy and professionalism.

Nice-to-Haves:
*Knowledge of state and federal programs affecting student access to health services.
*Familiarity with School health policies and procedures.
*Effective written and verbal communication skills.
*Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and coordinate team efforts.
*Strong interpersonal skills across varied stakeholders including families and state agencies.

Work Schedule & Compensation:
*Initial part-time role with the possibility of transitioning to full-time.
*Work schedule to be determined based on school needs.
*Competitive salary based on experience and qualifications.

Benefit Information

Licensure renewal paid by the institution. Tuition reimbursement for higher education degrees. Testing fees for additional licensing endorsements paid by the institution. (If applicable) 191 contract days.
